The two most important things you must know:
- You must be 14 or older to ride any electrically assisted bike or scooter.
- Electric bikes with a motor over 250W or assistance above 15.5 mph are not road-legal as standard bikes and must be registered, insured, and ridden like a motor vehicle unless used on private land with the landowner's permission.

1. Overview

This legal notice outlines the rules, safety guidance, and responsibilities for using electric bikes (EAPCs) and e-scooters purchased or used via our site. By using our products or website, you agree to comply with all applicable UK laws and the terms outlined in this notice.

2. Electric Bikes (EAPCs)
2.1 Classification
Most electric bikes sold in the UK are classified as Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles (EAPCs). To qualify as an EAPC:
- The bike must have pedals capable of propelling it.
- The motor must not exceed 250 watts (continuous output).
- The motor must not assist above 15.5 mph / 25 km/h.
- If equipped with a throttle, it must not provide assistance above walking speed (3.7 mph / 6 km/h) without pedaling.
The bike must display either:
- Manufacturer’s details and power output, or
- A compliance sticker confirming EAPC standards.
2.2 Age Requirements
Riders must be at least 14 years old to ride an EAPC on public roads.
2.3 Riding Locations
EAPCs may be ridden on public roads, cycle paths, and other areas where bicycles are permitted.
Riding on pavements, pedestrian-only zones, or any restricted areas is prohibited.
2.4 Safety Recommendations
Wear appropriate protective gear, including a helmet.
Use the bike only in safe conditions and observe all local traffic laws.
Perform regular maintenance as recommended by the manufacturer.
3. Non-Road Legal E-Bikes
Electric bikes that exceed 250W or assist above 15.5 mph are considered motor vehicles under UK law. Legal requirements include:
- Registration with the DVLA.
- Insurance valid for motor vehicles.
- A valid driving licence for the rider.
- Necessary safety features, including indicators and registration plates.
- The rider must wear a motorcycle helmet.
Failure to comply may result in:
- Fines, penalties, or prosecution.
- Vehicle seizure.
- Points on your driving licence.
4. E-Scooters
4.1 Privately Owned E-Scooters
These are Illegal to use on public roads, pavements, cycle lanes, or pedestrian areas. May only be used on private land with the landowner’s permission.
4.2 Rental E-Scooters
UK government e-scooter rental trials operate in select areas.
Riders must be at least 16 years old and hold a provisional or full driving licence.
Follow all local rules for rental e-scooter usage.
Rental e-scooters are insured by the operator.
4.3 Safety Guidance
Wearing a helmet is strongly recommended, even when not legally required.
Observe local speed limits and general safety practices.
