Legal notice: use of electric bikes

Legal notice:  Use of electric bikes

Last updated:  22 May 2025

What is an EAPC ?

Most electric bikes sold in the UK are classified as Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles (EAPCs). EAPCs are treated as standard bicycles — no license, tax, or insurance is required — as long as they meet the following conditions:

- The motor must not exceed 250 watts (continuous power output).

- The motor must not assist above 15.5 mph (25 km/h).

- The bike must have pedals that can propel it.

- The bike must display:

- The power output.

- The manufacturer’s details.

- Either the battery voltage or the maximum speed.

If your electric bike meets these criteria, you can legally ride it on UK roads, bike lanes, and cycle paths. Riding on pavements is not permitted.

Non-road legal e-bikes

Electric bikes that exceed the 250W power limit or offer assistance over 15.5 mph do not qualify as EAPCs. These bikes are treated as motor vehicles under UK law. If you use one on public roads, it must be:

- Registered with the DVLA

- Insured

- Ridden with a valid driving licence

- Fitted with necessary safety features (e.g. indicators, number plates)

- The rider must wear a motorcycle helmet

Failure to meet these requirements may result in prosecution, fines, or seizure of the bike.

Your responsibility

BikeVentures sells electric bikes with various specifications. If you choose to purchase a bike with higher performance (over 250W or capable of exceeding 15.5 mph with motor assistance), you are responsible for:

- Ensuring your usage complies with UK law.

- Using the bike only on private land (unless properly registered and insured).

- Understanding local laws and any legal updates.

Important notice

All customers are advised to check their local laws if intending to use our bikes outside the UK.

BikeVentures will not be held responsible for any legal consequences resulting from improper use or unlawful operation of electric bikes.
